I have been using this circuit from ELM at http://elm-chan.org



The great thing is it is self regulating so you could use up to 3 LED in series and it still works great.
I wound the transformer on little bobbin toroid.

you are right. It is the circuit for charging the cellphone batteries. Except the coil; is standart 100uH quarter watt resistor package.
Brightness might be becouse of the roll coil used here.

its already more than 5v, because to charge cell phone you need at least 5V.
OTOH, you may not get lots of current on these arrangements, so it takes either a hell lot of time or just barely enough to trickle charge.
